Could Ian have stayed? Could Hannah have been saved? We don’t have answers, just possibilities, and those possibilities open up a conversation we need to have. He's not present for Hannah’s illness or for her death. He tells her she made the wrong choice, apparently referring to the decision to have Hannah in the first place-and he essentially leaves their lives.
